Chap 1

Chapter 1:

The conservatory of the Bellandi estate was drenched in pristine afternoon light, filtered through soaring glass arches that cast sharp, cinematic brilliance across white Italian marble. There was no golden haze or romantic warmth in the air; the light was stark, clean, and unforgiving. Around the long banquet tables, fifty senior members of the syndicate sat in tailored black wool and raw silk, murmuring over flutes of chilled prosecco. Every face bore the fair, rosy complexion of the northern dynasty, their polished facades barely masking the predatory stillness beneath.

At the head table, thirty-nine-year-old Marcella Bellandi stood draped in an ivory lace gown sewn with seed pearls. Her fingers, crowded with platinum and emeralds, curled into a tight fist as she looked down at the child beside her.

Four-year-old Vivia stood frozen by the floral runner. She wore an old, faded formal dress that had once belonged to her deceased mother—the silk softened by years, the delicate lace along the hem fraying at the edges.

Without a word of warning, Marcella’s palm cracked across Vivia’s face.

The force of the strike spun the four-year-old sideways. Vivia lost her footing on the slick floor and hit the marble with a dull, sickening thud. A crystal centerpiece shivered, but the little girl did not cry out. She curled onto her side, both tiny hands clutching the tattered fabric of the bodice against her ribs.

Marcella smoothed her veil, smiling with poisonous contempt. "That rag belongs in the gutter, not in this family."

A collective breath caught in the room, but no one dared move.

At the center of the high table sat Nico Bellandi. At thirty-two, the Don possessed an arresting, angular beauty framed by a neatly trimmed dark beard and thick hair swept back from his temples. His slate-gray eyes did not blink. With fluid, terrifying deliberation, Nico pushed his chair back. The legs did not scrape; they glided over the stone.

Vivia saw him move. Dragging herself across the cold marble, her knees trembling beneath the frayed hem, she reached his polished leather shoes and gripped the wool of his trousers with desperate, white-knuckled fingers.

"Mom said never let them take this dress," Vivia sobbed, her small voice cutting through the suffocating silence. "Daddy... please."

Marcella stepped forward, her diamond heels clicking sharp and fast. "She’s embarrassing this table, Nico. Get the nanny to throw it in the incinerator."

Marcella reached down, her clawed fingers aiming straight for Vivia’s shoulder.

Nico’s left hand struck like an iron vise. He caught Marcella’s wrist mid-air, wrenching her arm backward while his right arm swept Vivia securely behind his frame.

Before his sister could draw breath, Nico brought his open right hand across her face.

The blow sounded like an axe splitting dry timber.

Marcella’s head snapped violently back. Her bridal tiara tore free from her pinned hair, clattering across the floor as her momentum sent her reeling backward into the wedding table. Three tiers of crystal champagne flutes collapsed in a catastrophic cascade, shattering into hundreds of glittering shards that showered her gown in vintage wine and foam.

As Marcella slid against the linen, her grasping fingers hooked into the hem of Vivia’s dress, ripping a concealed interior seam along the waist.

A small package wrapped in tight plastic dropped onto the marble with a sharp, plastic clink, followed by a folded square of yellowed paper.

Nico froze. His cold gaze locked onto the black casing of a miniature USB drive resting between two broken stems of glass.

Marcella’s arrogance vanished in an instant. Her face went translucent, her eyes bulging with feral panic as she lunged toward the floor.

"Nico… burn it," Marcella gasped, her voice dropping to a frantic, breathless whisper. "I swear to God, burn it now!"

Nico knelt. His tailored trousers pressed against the spilled wine as his scarred fingers scooped up the plastic-wrapped drive and the letter. He rose slowly, towering over his groveling sister.

"You never feared the dress," Nico said, his deep, raspy voice perfectly level, the controlled pause between each word heavier than a hammer fall. "You feared what she sewed inside."
